Spirit of the Festival Award 2009 : Dringo I’r Eitha’
Producer / Director : Alun Hughes
Executive Producer : Ifor ap Glyn
This film tells the story of a young climber – Ioan Doyle, who speaks eloquently and movingly about his obsession with climbing some of the world’s most vertiginous and terrifying mountains. The major achievement of this stunning film is that it allows the viewer a deep understanding of the passion that drives Ioan and of the extraordinary relationship between him and his brave and loving mother who allows him the freedom to follow his dream. The camera work is magnificent and the story told is extremely gripping – particularly the memorable scene in which his mother is feeding ropes up to her son who is dangling from a cliff hundreds of feet above her. The Jury was unanimous that Dringo I’r Eitha’ by Alun Hughes and Ifor ap Glyn fully deserves the Spirit of the Festival Award.
